Celebrating Excellence in Black Media: Jon Henry Receives Award
We were thrilled to announce that our Executive Director, Jon Henry, was honored with an esteemed award at the Black New World Media Awards held on June 3rd at the African American Art and Culture Complex in San Francisco from 6-9 pm.
The awards ceremony, hosted by Allyssa Victory, a local columnist for the SF Bay View newspaper, along with an ACLU lawyer and former Oakland mayoral candidate, was a night of celebration and recognition for outstanding contributions in Black media.
One of the highlights of the evening was the presentation of the Black Media Lifetime Achievement Award to Emory Douglas, the Minister of Culture and renowned revolutionary artist of the Black Panther Party. The second Lifetime Achievement Award was bestowed upon Jerome "JJ" Parson, the dedicated manager of the historic KPOO radio station, a beloved institution in the Bay Area community radio movement.
The event's keynote speakers were BART board member Lateefah Simon, known for her work in protecting BART riders against police terrorism, and Oakland’s Inspector General Michelle Phillip, tasked with investigating the criminal patterns of the Oakland Police Department for the Community Police Commission.
The semi-formal affair was a gathering of, local community activists, politicians, artists, and more, all coming together to celebrate the incredible achievements in Black media.
We hope you were able to secure your spot and joined us for an unforgettable night at the Black New World Media Awards. Tickets were available on Eventbrite.
We came together to celebrate and elevate Black media excellence!
